Enhance, manipulate and output photo images


Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to enhance photo images ready for output. This process could be digital or using a wet darkroom.

It applies to individuals who use techniques to enhance and resolve the concept for the image. They may work in photo centres, specialised photo processing laboratories or photography studios.

No licensing, legislative or certification conditions apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Plan image output

1.1 Clarify and confirm concept for final images in consultation with relevant personnel

1.2 Identify and select work prints or files and check that they are consistent with concept or brief

1.3 Assess qualities and characteristics of work prints or files suitable for enhancement and manipulation

1.4 Confirm output strategies, and materials and equipment needed to produce required image

2. Prepare for analog or digital work

2.1 Select darkroom or digital work environment to meet project requirements

2.2 Maintain clean and safe work environment during production of work

2.3 Set up relevant equipment safely and prepare materials for work

3. Enhance and manipulate images

3.1 Select techniques for image enhancement and manipulation consistent with concept, testing processes and purpose of work to produce optimal quality images

3.2 Identify screen-based issues for consideration where appropriate

3.3 Apply selected techniques to images

4. Output images

4.1 Select appropriate materials and equipment for output option

4.2 Produce output image by digital or analog means, and confirm that image meets project requirements with relevant personnel

4.3 Confirm that privacy, intellectual property and other relevant legal requirements are met

5. Complete post-shoot activities

5.1 Restore work area to original condition, disposing of waste safely

5.2 Clean and care for equipment according to manufacturer instructions

5.3 Store equipment according to workplace procedures

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

plans, selects and uses processes and outputting options to suit the job requirements and in accordance with workplace procedures.

produce a body of images that demonstrates command of enhancement and manipulation techniques

clean work areas and check and store equipment according to workplace requirements.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.


Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline the features of prints or files that can be enhanced or manipulated

describe common techniques for enhancing and manipulating images

describe a range of output equipment and materials that can be used in analog, digital or other print technologies

outline a range of output options

summarise work health and safety procedures for using darkroom equipment and materials and/ or using screens and keyboards for extended periods of time

outline intellectual property and other legislation relevant to image enhancement, manipulation and output.


Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

photo imaging materials, tools and equipment.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
